My first year as a Vintage Charm Company Franchisee – by Helen Batchelor

I’m very excited to say that next month I will have been a franchisee with The Vintage Charm Company for 12 months!

My Daughter, Sophia was born in February 2011 and it was a really difficult decision to make deciding whether I should return to my job after maternity leave. While I was considering my options, I made an appointment with The Vintage Charm Company to have a Fingerprint Christening Bracelet made for Sophia to wear on her special day. During my appointment with Donna, she mentioned that franchise opportunities were available and I knew straight away it was the new challenge I had been looking for!

The last 12 months have been brilliant, I’ve built my franchise up and work two and a half days a week. My working hours fit perfectly around Sophia’s childcare and I get to meet some wonderful families with my job. It’s brilliant that I get to make money doing a job that I love and great that I’ve been able to use my previous experience in retail and HR to my advantage too.  Working for myself also gives me lots of flexibility if Sophia is ill and can’t go to nursery. I get real satisfaction and motivation from seeing the faces of customers when they receive their charms and am looking forward to a great few months of sales in the run up to Christmas – it’s so nice to be able to help customers find that perfect gift for someone special.

And after you’ve dried off why not head to Sanders Park in Bromsgrove – with a cafe serving snacks and ice creams, a duck pond, band stand, tennis courts, a fantastic huge kids playground, skate park, not to mention a jam-packed schedule full of shows and festivals throughout the year, there is lots to see and do. Choose from circus and drumming workshops, ‘Art in the Park’, magic shows and more. Why not take a picnic, Frisbee and football and enjoy a day out in the beautiful surroundings.

Mmmm, chocolate!   Don’t fancy getting wet? Maybe a visit to Cadbury World is more up your street? Not only do you get to see how chocolate is made, and have a go at creating your own taste sensation, but there’s even a play area too!  Click here to go straight to the Cadbury World website.

More of an outdoorsy type? Why not head off for an adventure at your local National Trust spot. And the great news is kids go free this August when you download a voucher here. With over 500 National Trust sites, there is plenty to choose from including beautiful gardens, adventure playgrounds, perfect picnic places and fantastic fountains. Want more of an action packed day out? Then head to one of the UK’s theme parks and with several to choose from you’ll be spoilt for choice. How about Legoland – a theme park dedicated to children between the ages of 3 and 12 with lots of interactive rides, wild water rides, building workshops and even a driving school!   Or maybe Alton Towers is more up your street – with rides for the grown ups as well as the children, a hotel, water park and spa there is something for everyone! For younger children Peppa Pig World is a great place to visit and sure to be a big hit with Peppa and George fans  Are your kids mad about animals? Need Rainy Day indoor fun? With the good old British weather being so unpredictable, it’s good to have a few ideas up your sleeve for a miserable day. So if you’d like to stay dry and save some pennies, why not indulge in some fun at home.

Cardboard Box Fun! Get down your local supermarket and pick up a large cardboard box– make a house or a space helmet or whatever else takes your fancy. You can decorate using egg boxes, kitchen roll tubes, pipe cleaners, pictures cut from magazines and anything else you can find. Your only limit is your imagination!

Back to nature – find and clean a jam jar or old lunch box and pierce the lid with a sharp knife or scissors. Now send your little one into the garden on a nature hunt – first they can collect some grass, leaves and twigs to line the bottom of the container. Next, see how many bugs, snails, worms or ladybirds they can find. Your little bug hunter can observe their new pets for 24 hours before releasing them back into the wild.

Treasure Hunt – Hide 5 pence pieces around the house with clues leading to the next. See how long it takes your little one to find all the clues and coins and leave a nice surprise for them at the end.

Music time – Fill up a collection of glass bottles or jars with different levels of water to make a fun xylophone! Add some bright food colourings, get a metal spoon and enjoy listening out for the different pitches.

We hope you enjoyed this guide and would love to know what you got up to in the last few weeks before going back to school! Leave your comments here…..
